What do joint injections involve?

If you're grappling with joint discomfort stemming from arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, or other sources, Coastal Health offers an optimal solution through joint injections. Dr. Alisha Detorres administers joint injections designed not only to alleviate pain but also to address the root cause behind it. These injections effectively combat inflammation and enhance your range of motion. Our comprehensive range of joint injections covers areas like the knee, shoulder, elbow, wrist, spine, and ankle, among others.

Unlike conventional approaches that focus on managing chronic pain with prescriptions and over-the-counter drugs, we aim to restore both damaged tissue structure and function by bolstering the body's innate healing capabilities.

What is Regenerative Medicine?

These safe and effective therapies, which can be applied to joints such as the hip, knee, ankle, wrist, elbow, and shoulder, are conveniently administered at Coastal Health in an outpatient setting, enabling patients to regain function on the same day.

Regenerative medicine targets the root cause of symptoms, potentially reducing or eliminating chronic pain while accelerating healing.

Increasingly recommended for orthopedic issues affecting joints like the hips, knees, and shoulders, regenerative medicine allows you to avoid surgery or expedite recovery when surgery is necessary. This approach also benefits musculoskeletal pain, supports wound healing, and addresses signs of aging. It's a particularly suitable option if you suffer from various injuries and conditions, such as ACL/MCL/Meniscal tears, osteoarthritis, tendonitis, and back or neck injuries.

Enhance your mobility and function by stimulating your body's natural collagen production while strengthening joint tissues and tendons to reduce the risk of future injuries.

Regenerative Therapies We Offer At Coastal Health

What to expect

After settling comfortably in our private procedure area, we draw a small blood sample, typically around four tablespoons. The blood is then separated in a centrifuge, and the resulting serum, combining plasma, platelets, and nutrients, is reinjected into the targeted areas on your skin, determined during your consultation. The injection process takes approximately 5 to 15 minutes, depending on the patient. Your body's natural platelets kickstart the healing process, similar to how they respond to a cut or scrape.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections

PRP injections involve injecting a solution derived from your own platelets and plasma directly into the affected tissue, muscle, or ligament, utilizing their healing properties. At Coastal Health, we initiate PRP injections by drawing a small blood sample and isolating platelets using a centrifuge. Dr. Detorres then uses ultrasound to pinpoint the optimal injection site, enhancing precision.

PRP promotes collagen and elastin production, contributing to firmer, more youthful-looking skin.

As we use your own blood, the risk of allergic reactions is minimal, ensuring a safe procedure with significant and lasting results. You may experience temporary redness, swelling, and slight tenderness after the procedure, typically subsiding within a day or two. Initial results may be noticeable after about 4 to 6 weeks, with full effects typically appearing around three months later.

What to expect

It aims to:

Strengthen affected areas
Improve functionality
Increase range of motion
Reduce pain and stiffness

Dr. Detorres begins your treatment by using ultrasound to assess the target areas, guiding the treatment strategy. Dextrose solution is then administered, prompting the body's natural healing process to build new tissues, fortifying joints, muscles, or related structures, and reducing pain. Many patients experience improved well-being after just one session, although we typically recommend three sessions spaced about a month apart for the most favorable outcomes, with the treatment frequency tailored to your needs.

Prolotherapy

Prolotherapy involves injecting a dextrose solution into injured joints to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and improve mobility. Dextrose stimulates cell growth and the body's natural healing response, fostering the development of new tissue in weakened joints, muscles, ligaments, or tendons, enhancing stability. Dr. Detorres utilizes ultrasound for precise injection placement, optimizing results. While a single session often yields significant improvements, the recommended treatment regimen consists of three injections administered one month apart.

Prolotherapy offers a promising solution to pain and inflammation, commonly applied to joints like knees, hips, shoulders, and others.

What to expect when receiving a joint injection?

Prior to the joint injection, Dr. Detorres will conduct a thorough examination to gain a comprehensive understanding of your pain, its origins, and more. This enables her to formulate an optimal pain management strategy. Once your personalized treatment plan is established, the injections will be administered in a private treatment room. The process entails reclining comfortably while a local anesthetic is applied to minimize discomfort.

Dr. Detorres frequently employs ultrasound to pinpoint the ideal injection site for dextrose, a substance that fosters cell growth and triggers the body's innate healing mechanisms, effectively alleviating pain and rectifying the underlying issue. Most of our patients report relief within 2 – 3 days after their joint injections. The necessity for follow-up treatments after several weeks or months, if required, will be discussed during your initial consultation.
